Ice cream all year round
As you might have noticed by now, I absolutely love ice cream and could talk about it all day long.
I firmly believe ice cream shouldn’t be relegated to the summer season. Ice cream should be enjoyed every day.
It’s the best dessert after dinner but also a great breakfast to wake up real fast. Ice cream is better than a cuddle: it can mark a happy occasion or transform a bad day into a good one.
When I moved to London, I discovered that ice cream is always served in theatres during the half-time interval. Going strong with my motto ‘ice cream all year round’. If possible, I now love theatre even more!
Half-time Ice Cream
I must say that I find the idea of eating ice cream in an overheated theatre equally marvelous and bizarre.
I am very clumsy and having me eating melting ice cream in your auditorium, is like inviting Jackson Pollock to decorate your seating area. Why would you take such a risk?
While enjoying my overpriced ice cream in the steamy theatre circle and barely managing not to drop it, I asked the question to Google.
Sadly, no one really knows the origin of this tradition.
Apparently, ice cream was introduced to UK theatres at the beginning of the twentieth century.
The Guardian says that Carlo Gatti is the person that British people need to thank for bringing the wonderful dessert to UK. The same gentleman also happened to run several London music halls!
The Stage says instead that seaside tourists were bringing their ice creams into theatres from the local pier in Victorian England.
Interestingly, ice cream and other treats were banned from being distributed in theatres for a short period. Confectioners feared the competition, but they were soon won over with complimentary theatre tickets.
However, there is another story, with not so much evidence behind, that I chose to believe in.
Don’t know if it’s true, but I am definitely going to use this as an excuse when having my third ice cream of the day 🎤

hoursYummy, easy, and healthy frozen yogurt lollies that take only ten minutes to prepare and a couple of hours to chill in the freezer. You’ll only need three ingredients, and they are great for kids too as they don’t have any added sugar.
Ingredients
100 g frozen raspberries
2 spoons of lemon juice
300 g plant-based yogurt
- To decorate (optional)
30 g white chocolate + 2 tbsp of water
5 g rose petal or dried raspberries
Fresh or frozen whole raspberries
- Equipment
Pot + spoon
Ice lolly moulds
Method
- Melt the raspberries with two spoons of lemon over low heat. This should take around 5 mins from frozen, 2 mins if using fresh berries.
- Let the raspberries’ coulis cool down for 10 mins.
- You now have two options to mix the ingredients and decorate your lollies:
- Option 1 – a bright pink heart
- Add three spoons of yogurt to the mould
- Add two spoons of the raspberries’ coulis
- Add two spoons of yogurt on top
- Freeze the lollies for at least three hours
- Decorate the lollies with melted white chocolate and rose petals. First, melt the chocolate in a baine-marie in 10-15mins with two spoons of water and let it cool for 10 mins. Second, immediately add the rose petals on top, the white chocolate will freeze very quickly.
- Option 2 – two sides, two colours
- Add four spoons of yogurt to the mould
- Add two spoons of the raspberries’ coulis
- Gently mix with a teaspoon the yogurt and the coulis so to have white and pink stripes on one side of the lolly
- Add two raspberries on top of each lolly to decorate
- Freeze the lollies for at least three hours. This option is much quicker and it will give you a different colour (white/pink) on each side of the lolly
Notes
- You can add a spoon of sugar to the raspberries’ coulis if you have a sweet tooth.
- These are only two options but there are many others, for example, you can directly whizz the yogurt with the berries for a bright pink lolly!
- You can also use any other fruit that is in season, peaches, apricots, cherries…so many delicious options!
Note to self: don’t take photos of your frozen lollies on the hottest day of the year #melting!
