Avocado chocolate mousse

Avocado, banana, and cocoa: this odd combination surprisingly works! In just a couple of minutes, you’ll have a satisfying, smooth and rich chocolate mousse, a dessert to end dinner or a sweet treat for any time of the day.

I never thought I’d say this in my life, but last year during lockdown, I’ve found myself with too many avocados in the kitchen.

Yeah, I think you can get more Londoner and millennial than this.

I subscribed to Oddbox, a fantastic company delivering you ‘odd’ veggies at home. They rescue fruits and vegetables from farmers. You can buy veggies that will normally get thrown away at great prices. The cons (or pros if you like to experiment in the kitchen) is that is a random vegetable roulette, you can’t pick the content of the box, you get what you get. The team is phenomenal though and they even send you inspiring recipes with each box.

One day I won the avocado lottery and got something like 15 big ripe avocados. Bum! I felt so lucky and so happy….till I received 10 more ripe avocados the week after, and 5 more the week later.

Initially I was feasting on the famous avocado on toast, I then made guacamole for the entire neighbourhood, I then ate tacos for breakfast, I then started to give avocados away (they call me the avocado girl in this area for a reason), and then…I run out of ideas.

My friend Ania insulted me massively for this, I know it’s a very controversial statement, but I decided to come clean and share this personal and delicate issue with you.

Yes, in my life I have experienced the very weird and very privileged problem of too many avocados.

Tired of salty snacks and surrounded by threatening avocados, I felt the massive guilt of food potentially going to waste.

Avocados have also a surprising negative environmental impact as its crops encourage deforestation, they need a crazy amount of water, and unless you live in sunny areas of the world, they normally travel to our tables from very far away. I couldn’t possibly waste any of these precious fruits.

When I started to eat avocado straight out from the fridge day and night, when I thought I hit rock bottom, I remembered someone somewhere once mentioned you could get the most incredible chocolate mousse out of avocados. This is it, I combined all the other leftovers, leopard-skin bananas and expired cocoa powder, in the most luxurious and full of nutrients mousse.

It was love at first spoon, most of all because you can’t really taste the avocado, I was so sick of it by then.

It’s been a year since the episode of too many avocados. A few days ago, I felt ready to face my post-avocado trauma and I decided to make this mousse again. It tasted even better than I remembered and thought it deserved a space in this little blog of mine.

I hope you’ll try it, whether you love or hate avocados, whether you bought avocados especially for this, or whether you have also a forgotten avocado looking sadly at you in your kitchen.

Mash it up, mix it up, and enjoy a fudgy chocolate cream with a secret ingredient.
